Lakeway, TX May 4, 2008-
Denis
Watson birdied 18 to take a one stroke lead in the clubhouse on Sunday
in the final round. The question was whether it would hold with
Nick
Price still in contention. This was the 2nd time the fellow South
Africans had battled it out but last year resulted with Price coming
in third to Watson at the 2007
Senior PGA Championship at
Kiawah Island.
Nick Price had doubled 15 & 16, dissolving his 3 stroke lead over the
field. Price had a chance to tie it up on 18 with a birdie and force a
play-off, but after
hitting his 2nd shot into the bunker on 18, his out came up about 20 feet
short. Some fool from the gallery yelled "The putt goes right". It did
and Watson was the new 2008 FedEx Kinkos Classic Champion.
Watson said that the greens were "frightly fast" and making putts on the
back nine was very difficult. He alluded to the greens being US OPEN
fast or faster. Calling his victory a "back in win" this is not the
first time Watson has put a together a stellar final round to close the
deal having previously come back from a 5 & 7 shot deficit for wins on
Sunday on the Champions Tour.
Although Nick's game collapsed on the way in, after the final round he
was still very gracious saying he felt he played "well" today but
nothing seemed to go his way. Still looking for his first win on the
Champions Tour, Price hung around for at least 20 minutes after his
round signing autographs behind the 18th green.
