Ray Abbott – CEO & Founder of AmigoGolf.com
Welcome:
I hope you enjoy our site. From our inception in 1996 our main
goal has been to provide Central Texas and Texas Valley golfers three
main components of what we feel golfers are looking for when making a
tee time…..course costs and contact info, forecasted weather, and golf
event/deals/news items of interest in our target area…all for free with
no requirement to register with us.
Our History:
Back in 1996 I was working for Cisco Systems in San Antonio and
decided to take up the game of golf. As unusual as it seems now, even at
Cisco at the time, the use of the internet was in its infancy. As I fell
into the black hole of embracing the game of golf, I began to think
about how the web might interact with the game and the players of golf.
But first things first:
As common as it is today to register a URL, in 1996 it was a
little cumbersome but I was able to register golfsatx.com,
golfaustin.com, and austingolf.com. I spent a lot of time and a lot of
the green stuff developing GolfSATX and GolfAustin as two separate
sites. Since we do everything in-house here at AmigoGolf, I began to
realize it was just not practical to support two separate sites. In
December of 1999 I registered the URL AmigoGolf.com and began the
process of combining GolfSATX and GolfAustin into one site. I retained
the URL GolfAustin.com and to this day if you go to GolfAustin.com it
rolls over to AmigoGolf.com. Along the way, due mainly to our friendship
with Bill Johnson (former marketing director at GolfSanAntonio) we also
registered golfsanantonio.org and valerotexasopen.com for Golf San
Antonio which we handed over to them at no charge. We just wanted to
protect them from having to negotiate with URL terrorists in some 3rd
world country over the rights to these dot.com names.
The LayUp:
For the past few years we have
sort of been treading water. We’ve had our ups and downs as any endeavor
goes, but along the way we’ve had a lot of fun and managed to survive.
Many years back we asked for and were granted media access to the PGA
Champions Tour events in San Antonio and Austin. Since then we have been
an avid supporter and promoter of these events and have covered them in
some form or fashion. I must single out Colby Callaway of
ProLinks Sports (ProLinks manages the
Champion’s Tour AT&T Championship in SA and the Classic in Austin) for
his support and appreciation of our efforts. Colby came to understand
early on that, although we’re not PGATOUR.com, we try our best to
promote regional events. I must also acknowledge the support of Paul
Greenwood who has been the Texas Open Media Center Director for many
years. Paul is a good friend and has always been there over the years
and I have nothing but the highest respect for him and his support.
Where we are today:
AmigoGolf.com continues to provide current regional golf
info to our visitors and has no plans to change our format.
Our Future:
Our business plan call for us to integrate more and more
regional course green fee offers/specials and course value information
to help you determine your next course destination not only based on
price, but what you can expect once you arrive at your golf course of
choice. We also will be opening an AmigoGolf.com blog soon to allow
everyone to share their golf experiences, good or bad, in the Central
Texas and the Texas Valley golf region.
Our Goal:
Here AmigoGolf.com we feel that we’re the closest thing
to a privately held golf regional web site that is answerable to only
one entity, our visitors.
